Temperance
I am ever grateful for hospitality,
But I don't wish to impose on good graces,
Nor to place undue stress on my hosts.
'Tis not my prerogative to do so,
I'll not overburden with my presence--
I've stayed quite late.
I'm not a teetotaler nor a snob,
And the wine is surely of excellent vintage,
I treat for my senses of taste and smell,
Dearer to me than the freshest bouquet,
But I'll pass on another round for now--
I've drank my fill.
To say I'm ascetic would be a stretch,
I thoroughly enjoyed the food,
It was surely sumptuous meal:
My compliments go out to the chef!
Still, I'll not ask for more--
I've eaten enough already.
Good company I always enjoy:
What son! What Conversation!
I'll remember this night fondly
In days which are bleak and dreary,
However I cannot stay to talk more--
I've spoken enough for tonight.
Good night, dear madams and sirs!
I'll say a sober though not somber farewell,
And leave before I've gorged myself,
Nor should I want to hurt
Your kind ears with my boasting--
For now the evening is at it end.
